Solar Water Heating F.A.Q’s
1. Why install Solar Water Heating ?
- An efficient Solar Water system can reduce your electricity bill by at least 33% whilst providing you with 24/7 hot water at normal temperature of 60 degrees C.
- A Household with an electricity bill of R750.00/month can save R250.00/month
- The cost of such a system completely installed is approximately R16,000.00
- Financing this through your Access Bond will cost you R200.00 per month
- So, you SAVE R50.00/month, increase the value of your house and help to reduce South Africa’s electricity generating demand by + 450 kWh per month.
- Eskom forecasts that domestic electricity cost will double over the next 4 years which means that you save more and more every year.
- Use our Solar Calculator to see what your particular SAVINGS will be.
2. How do I know which System to use ?
- Our trained Sales Consultants backed by our Technical Department will assess your particular Household hot water requirements and together with our installers, determine the most economical and effective system for your property.
- If your existing hot water geysers are still in sound condition and supply sufficient hot water to meet your household hot water consumption pattern, we will size your Solar system accordingly and connect the Solar panels directly to your existing geysers.
- Whatever your new, expansion or unique special requirements are, we will design, supply and install the correct Solar system for you.
3. What are the factors that affect the installation cost ?
- The location and capacity of your hot water geysers, suitable North facing roof, pitch or flat roof, type of roof covering, trees or buildings that may obstruct sunshine during 08h00 to 16h00
4. I don’t want an unsightly tank on my roof
- You don’t need one when using our systems because our vacuum tube panels are all that you will see on your roof. Most residential estates do not allow tanks on top of the roof because of the aesthetic impact on the environment.
5. I’ve heard of steam coming out of taps when using Solar systems
- This can happen to most systems when the occupants are away from their homes for a few days and no hot water is being used. This causes temperature build-up in the system which can eventually cause the water to reach boiling point.
- Our uniquely, locally developed control system (optional extra) addresses this problem by monitoring the temperature of the water in the system and then allowing small quantities of hot water to be regularly discharged safely, before boiling point is reached.
-
During times of irregular hot water consumption due to
an influx of visitors staying with you, the control panel (optional extra)
has a special manual BOOSTER switch enabling you to switch over to geyser
element heating as required.
- Before installing a Solar system ask the supplier if his product complies.
6. What about frost and hail damage to the system ?
- The glass tubes on our panels can withstand hailstones of 35mm. diameter. However, hailstorms are unpredictable and in the unlikely event of shattered tubes, our "clip-in" panel system is designed such that tubes are easily and quickly replaced as required. Since the tubes do not have any water circulating in them, there is no emptying or flushing of the system required. Simply clip in the new tubes.
- Even if some tubes are damaged, the system continues to provide you with hot water, albeit at lower efficiency.
- Also the effect of frost is limited by our unique control device which monitors low water temperature conditions in the system and activates the fitted electric pump to circulate hot water through the system in order to prevent freezing conditions bursting pipework.
- In any event, the system manifold and pipework is suitably insulated and lagged as an added protection.
7. Won’t cloudy days prevent me from having hot water ?
- Our control system includes a timer which is preset to switch on your geyser element to boost the water temperature ensuring that you have 24/7 hot water.
- During times of irregular hot water consumption due to an influx of visitors staying with you, the control panel has a special manual BOOSTER switch enabling you to switch over to geyser element heating as required.
8. What maintenance is required ?
- Other than an occasional check-up to ensure that the pump, safety valves, temperature probes and tubes are in good working order, no other maintenance is required.
- Enquire about our Maintenance Plan which not only allows peace of mind concerning your Solar system but also provides for an annual check-up of the entire plumbing system on your property.
- Our systems are installed by accredited teams who are members of I.O.P.S.A (Institute of Plumbing South Africa) in order to provide you with a quality, hassle free installation in accordance with Municipal regulations and by-laws.
- Our systems have a 5 year warranty on parts and 1 year on installation. See Terms and Conditions on your Quotation/Order Form.
- A well designed installed Solar system should last at least 20 years.
